The vBulletin staff of GSCentral want to know what forums you'd like for us to consider keeping, dropping, or adding in the future. We wanted the entire community to determine the future look and lay-out of the boards together.

What forums should we add/remove/merge together? Let us know!

Thanks to hawkeye2777 for the idea. We have a new site and a new database and tons of new features, so why not a new forum lay-out to boot?

My layout depends more on the poster rather than the forum for organization. This is to prevent having a forum 9 forums deep. Not to mention, if the people requesting codes/making codes can organize their threads and keep them clean, the forum will give off a better outlook to the maturity and IQ of the members on it. At least, this is just my opinion.

I think we really need to cut down on the number of forums. There's too much overlap. Without further ado, here are my suggestions:

I'm w/o access to my computer right now, so I can't really update mine (have some new ideas/some to pitch).

Some comments (my opinion obviously):
-The 'Rules' forum should probably just be a Global Announcement w/ the rules in it. Any other thread there could just be a thread for 'The Information'.
-Like Spawn said, there shouldn't be too many levels of sub-forums; maybe limit them to a max of 3-5.
-Organization should (maybe) rely 50% on the user and have 50% supplied by the forums.

Once I get back online w/ my computer (need another new AC adapter), I'll post my revised submission (trying to incorporate ideas from all of the current submissions). Hopefully it'll be Thurs at the latest.

I thought it would be appropriate to incorporate "shark" style names with forum names, which is why I renamed "I AM NEW" to "Pups" (pups are baby sharks) and made the off-topic discussion forum to "The Shark Tank".

Organization (not important now, but you can read if you want; I kinda rambled on, which I'm doing now and is why I put it in spoiler tags):

Most (if not all) forums will probably incorporate thread prefixes (vBulletin feature). It's a fairly useful way to organize threads without forcing users to follow a procedure or using tons of sub forums. Here's some ideas of what each forum could contain:

Memory Hacking --> Nintendo Wii --> Codes, Virtual Console & Wiiware: [NTSC-U/C] [PAL] [NTSC-JPN]

Memory Hacking --> Handhelds --> Nintendo DS: [AR/USA] [AR/EUR] [AR/JPN] [CB/USA] [CB/EUR] [CB/JPN]

Community --> The Shark Tank: [Forum Game]

And so on... in forums like "The Shark Tank" they can be optional or in forums like "Code Requests" they can be required. If I remember correctly, it's easy to specify them too (drop-down menu or radio buttons). To keep from getting the thread prefixes confused with the thread title, the prefixes can be color coded as well. But, that's for later; just thought I'd mention how it can still be organized without the use of several sub forums.

I pretty much used ideas from everyone who posted in this thread, so yeah. Discard my previous submission; I like this one much better. I was probably unclear somewhere, ask if you're confused by something I posted.

It's a good idea in theory, but it's really easy to miss, especially if you subscribe to threads and don't pay attention to too many others (like me :P ). I think that support should be thrown into the code threads, and make the hackers update the original post with codes, that way there is no browsing to do through 50 pages of crap and if an answer is needed, the hacker's thread is updated so it is easier to give help as well. (But there does have to be some guides to it. We definitely don't want a rerun of the OLD Super Smash Bros Brawl topic @.@ )

And as an update to the rules, since the language forums are out, just add a list of names of the bilingual people who can help out to the rules, and that takes care of that issue.

I pretty much like Rune's suggestion to simplify things, but put the rules in the "Information" forum instead of the "I Am New" forum.

I am avoiding any obscure names for forums, since that seems to merely confuse people. Hence why I wouldn't support the renaming of the "I AM NEW" forum to "Pups".

4 days without any new replies. After almost a month of discussion, I feel we are making good headway. I propose a cut-off day of July 15 @ 9PM so the forums can be re-organized into the new lay-out.

Any comments on my proposal above?

Good point; I think it would be easier to have hackers follow a set of guidelines than the average user. That's exactly what I wanted to avoid anyway (the old Brawl topic).

Did some cleanup today; not sure why Wii and VC/WiiWare (along with the Wii request threads) were merged, but they were separated after spending about 2 hours doing so. Since none of the display orders were changed, I edited that as well.

Hope to continue this later, by cleaning up stickies for example.

Here's a rough list:

- I cleaned up stickies last night; pretty much all I did was replace "Rules" stickies with forum announcements and unstick very old threads (most of which either had no activity since 12+ months ago or those that were just simply outdated). I left them in their particular forums (except for "rules" stickies, which I just moved to archives).

- Certain forums, as you might have noticed, now require thread prefixes. Most of them just specify the system (Handheld Hacking, Retro Hacking, Code Requests) or region (for Wii stuff). I may add an FAQ item for this if needed... most of the prefixes should be self-explanatory, if not, then I can post a guide for them.

- I updated most templates to their most recent vB revisions (along with fixing certain styling bugs that we had when we switched to postbit_legacy). Unfortunately, Darkness is still pretty buggy.

- Found a mistake I made when I made the "moderated" usergroup; had to do with a usergroup promotion that wasn't switched over properly. People who get 150 posts now should be moved into the "Members" usergroup now.

- Custom user titles removed from the templates... it never worked as I intentioned it to anyway. I'll make them available in a different way, but only to certain usergroups (an incentive thing).

- "Signed" is removed as well... seems pointless as that's what a signature is for.

- Only users w/ >150 posts or users that are in the "hackers" group can post new threads in the code forums. Everyone can reply to those threads however.

- New users only need 3 approved posts to become a regular user.

- Improved the signature overflow code.

- Added new notices.

- Rules forum replaced with "Forum Rules" global announcement.

- Added a FAQ entry for GSC specific stuff.

I probably left out some stuff... but that's a rough list of what I did all last night until about 4 am CST. :P

I am sorry that the GSMayhem section got removed. I spent a good 4-5 hours working on revamping the forums until past 3AM. Before that I was patching the boards to the latest release (v4.0.5). The next day I was due to be at work for 830AM so it wasn't a pleasant experience when I thought I would finally have a night where I am not losing an excessive amount of sleep. (Most nights I get less than 5 hours of sleep.)

As for the sections, for my version of the revamp I wanted to make the forums as legible and as user-friendly as possible. This meant removing the tiny font sub-sections because us old farts are losing our eyesight and it makes it so much harder to see what we are clicking on! (In all seriousness, it actually makes browsing easier for everyone) It also makes the forums look more consistent than having multiple sub-forums for one or two main parent forums and the rest of the forum looking completely different. It's a much cleaner and more concise design, modeled after our primary goals for the main site's revision back in May.

I see that one of the other administrators has moved the sub-forums to the bottom of the forums, which is fine because it's out of the way and most people will only look at the first 4 forums anyways.

Hope that helps clear some decisions up.

Codes are first in all system hacking forums before  Homebrew/saves. Regions like PAL, NTSC Japan are sub-forums of codes if applicable.

The forum structure is already complete, but I guess we can ask for better names for some forums/categories.

A strictly "gaming" discussion forum could be added if there's enough interest for it (pushing Clan as a subforum of it).

General Gaming was hardly ever used. Hence the compression of the forums.

Posts weren't deleted *by me*. I moved everything meticulously, which is how it took so long. Not sure why the post-count went down, if it did.

Edit: I believe that by moving posts out of the main forums and into the Archive/Junk/Dump, etc. you will lose posts. Posts may not have been necessarily deleted as much as "nullified". So if your posts have gone down, it is because the post-count have been updated appropriately to your current total # of posts in the active forums.

I fail to see any significant reason to split the retro forum into 5 other forums when the goal of the revamp was to reduce the # of forums that one has to browse through --- we're not going back to the previous bloat of forums, where most forums were barely being used. To organize older game systems would simply make our latest forum revision pointless; the point is not to have a forum for every game system ever made. To me, that will simply be the exact opposite of what we were hoping to achieve with the latest clean-up (ie. the goal was to crop forums that no one used!).

To bring back the cropped forums or create new ones (General Gaming/Recreation Room) when we have the Shark Tank/Shit Happens that is supposed to support a variety of topics would just make the forums even less friendly.

I can now personally find new codes by hackers within seconds with the new design where in the past I would be clicking multiple times on Nintendo Wii -> NTSC (J)/Nintendo Wii -> NTSC (U)/ Nintendo Wii -> PAL (E) just to find one thread or so in end of these forums.

Efficiency through simplicity.

@PikachuMan: I'll try updating post counts and stuff; maybe that's all it needs. I'm not sure why it went down... if anything it should have gone UP (posts in GSMayhem did not count towards your post count).


Also, if you want, I can simply make a [Gaming] thread prefix for The Shark Tank... will satisfy the want for a Gaming forum.
