Btw, interested in a challenging hack? Abystus and I would be interested in knowing whether a Danger Room Character/Level Modifier code could be hacked for Marvel War of the Gems (SNES).

We've discussed it before but apparently the game is coded very oddly. Also, a StarFox level modifier in the PAR format would be interesting. I came close with the level highlighter and route modifier but never found the real deal.

I'll have to take a peek. Never played the game. Is the danger room a level in the game? And by character/level modifier, are you talking about like in some games where your character builds up their level when gaining experience and kills? Or are you talking about being able to change which character you play in the danger room. More specifics if you please.

The Danger Room I believe is the practice room. Some enemies that you fight 1 on 1 only appear in the Danger Room and aren't in the 1P mode AFAIK. It is separate from the main game and, last I checked, can be accessed from the main menu.

The character modifier/level modifier has been found for the main game (the missions) but not for the Danger Room opponent. Abystus and I were interested in seeing whether there are any beta characters as the 2P or if it was possible to change the opponent at all.

A few characters I remember facing in the Danger Room were clones/evil variants of the characters you play as, such as Evil Hulk or other characters slipped in from the Marvel universe, like Omega Red.

Hey Rune, I've been able to change the characters you fight against in the practice room. Like you said, this game is programmed weird. I can only make it work using Geigers SNES9x with debugger. If I put the PAR code in the emulator cheats menu, it doesn't work (???????). Don't post this yet....But if you (using SNES9x debugger) hit the "show hex" button then open the RAM window, you can "freeze" the following values at 7E0001:XX

07 - Black Heart

Note: Don't change the value in 7E0001 and freeze it until you get to the Practice room/Password screen or the game will lock up. I tried 08 and 09 and the game locked up. Who knows, maybe there's something between 0A and FF.

I'm looking at the traces I've made to try and come up with a GG code.

Try a break on write to that address and log what addresses are writing to it. You will have to mod that writing address with the desired value for your character. This should limit your change in value to only when it is needed thus allowing the game to load normally. The value is only loaded briefly before the character is locked in and is the reason it did not display in memory after the character was selected. The game most likely freezes because other addresses are writing/reading to/from that address while the game is running before the value for the selected character is written. Nice work on the trace.

Taking my advice I have found the character modifier for the danger room. However this is a general asm hack (since the game does a random comparison based on other addresses and from my knowledge doesn't contain a 1 line code for the opponent value) and is not as short as I would have liked it. I'm sure there is room for improvement but for now this is a working code.

I have not tested beyond Black Heart as the next value in line crashed the game when loading the opponent (However I do believe I've seen Thanos in the danger room, eh I will look around a bit more tomorrow value wise). I don't believe this routine is tied to the in-game enemy modifier routine as the values are too low for being "bosses". This asm hack basically loads the value into the accumulator then branches over all their random 0-7 routine to the storing of the accumulator in 7E0001. Thanks for the starting point Hackwiz.

Brilliant piece of hacking Abystus!!!! I spent 3 hours yesterday looking at the same lines of code trying to figure out how to get the value I wanted in the accumulator then stored at 7E0001. It never dawned on me to use a branch command to get there. More than one way to skin a cat. Thanks for the lesson!!
We can shorten the list by using 80D73A64. This stores (STZ) 00 at 7E0001 and makes Dr. Doom your opponent.

P.S. I looked at the ROM/RAM table at SMWCentral yesterday, (great tools for hacking on SMW). Will have to give it some more scrutiny later on.

One technicality though, from a hardware standpoint (a real SNES and PAR), those codes won't work in a PAR because it can only affect memory addresses i.e. 7Exxxx issued by the microprocessor. The numbers you posted are ROM addresses and will only work with a Game Genie. In an emulator, it doesn't matter. But if someone wants to use these codes on a real SNES they will have to use the Game Genie. When you pop these codes into an emulator, the numbers you posted above will be displayed

Yea hardware compatibility is never really on my list of things to accomplish due to the fact that maybe 10% of people actually use the hardware to play their games vs the ease of use of an emulator. It is always nice when a code is completely hardware friendly, however I find due to the lack of input space within Game Genie that some codes just wouldn't be possible with either device.

You deserve credit for this as well so I request rune list both of us as authors on this hack. I would keep both versions as well because as we know they both work in emulators at least. Currently the code database doesn't have a field for "hardware friendly" so it's a mixed bag anyways. Thanks for the conversion as I might not have gotten around to that, especially in a thread with the Title "New SNES Game Genie Codes By Hackwiz" .

Just something to note:
A Real Pro Action Replay (at least MK3 does) will let you convert a Game Genie code and use. I've had success with codes that do not work on a Game Genie, but *will* work on the PAR once converted. Games that use special chips like Star Fox and Doom will not work if the switch is up on a PAR due to the extra microprocessor present on the carts, and the extensive use of CPU needed. I can confirm this.

Nensondubois, I'll have to try that with my PAR's. Got a couple of them...not sure which version they are. I'm just going by my memory. I once tried putting in a ROM address and the code didn't work. Burned alot of brain cells in my wild and crazy days. My recollection may be off!!! Thanks for the input!!!
